In Celebration of the Carrboro Centennial

Everyone who loves Carrboro now has an opportunity to participate in the Centennial festivities by creating and displaying their own original art piece, courtesy of the Carrboro Arts Committee. The Circle Art 100 project is about community identity and fellowship. To this end the format for the art pieces is a circle 100mm in diameter (about 4-inches). The Carrboro Arts Committee has printed enough circles to accommodate wide community participation. The back of the circle has been printed with a form for the artist to fill out which will identify and track the art piece throughout the Centennial year.

Valarie Schwartz's circle All types of media are encouraged; including painting, photography, poetry, graphics, collage, fabric, even 3-dimensional artwork is acceptable as long as it does not exceed 2 inches above the surface of the circle. Each entry will be registered and exhibited horizontally on specially designed and portable display stands, with the artist’s name prominently displayed underneath. Artwork on the stands can be grouped and re-grouped to form specialized exhibits which can travel to high-traffic locations; for example, ensembles of stands can be created which include selections from student work, professional artists, or other citizen groups, selected types of media, particular themes, specific recognition categories, etc. Registration of the circles allows their location to be tracked so that anyone who submits a piece of artwork will know where it is being exhibited throughout the Centennial year.

The Committee’s intention is that these display stands will form a traveling exhibit and move throughout the town and the county during the Centennial year. This initiative, in conjunction with other projects throughout the Carrboro business community, can help to energize Carrboro’s identity, or "brand," as a venue for the arts tourist and enhance or enliven our community through the display of community-based art in public spaces.

A full-size prototype display will be set up in various locations in Carrboro to distribute registered Circle Art blanks. Additionally, blank circles for the Circle Art 100 Carrboro Centennial are now available at the Recreation and Parks office at 100 N. Greensboro St. in Carrboro. Completed artwork can be submitted or mailed to the Century Center office as well and is due by April 15. All budding or professional artists, in fact all citizens who have a passion for Carrboro and who want to contribute to its 100th birthday festivities are encouraged to pick up a Circle and share in this community-wide opportunity to unite with each other in celebration of our unique and widely acclaimed town.
