Folks began gathering around 6:00 in front of the Century Center in Carrboro. The crowd was a peaceful, well ordered group who played music, brought out candles as the evening turned to night, chanted, and sang. They gathered to pray for peace and an end to a war they feel should never have started. Their numbers swelled as the night went on. Gatherings such as this have also been happening at up the street at UNC in Chapel Hill and a few mile away at Duke University in Durham.Carrboro Police Chief Carolyn Hutchison and Captain Joel Booker expressed relief that the group was an orderly one, staying on the sidewalk and out of the street. "We are concerned when groups get together like this because we fear for their safety," says Booker. "As long as they stay on the sidewalk we have no problem with them gathering." Thursday night a group of more than 250 people marched from the downtown Chapel Hill Post Office to Weaver St. Market in Carrboro, then turned around and headed back the same route. A crowd of this magnitude is hard to keep out of the street, and caused traffic problems in both towns. Antiwar demonstrations continue with a 24 hour vigil on Saturday on the UNC campus in Chapel Hill. Computer Stuff | Downtown Carrboro Map | Events | Prices | Restaurants | UniqueOrn Enterprises
