The Chapel Hill/Carrboro chapter of the NAACP held their 2003 Black Business Awards Ceremony Friday evening, February 28th. at Century Hall in the Carrboro Century Center. This event was the finale to Black History Month, which featured numerous activities to honor the African-American culture and achievements in our community. Providing music at this event was Morgan Harris on trumpet. An audience of around 100 folks showed up for the event.

Festivities began with Mayor Pro-tem Alex Zaffron introducing the program. Carrboro Aldeman Joal Broun introduced NAACP President Fred Battle and Secretary MaryJean Williams, planned the events for the month.


Historian Ed Caldwell traced the accomplishments of local Black entrepreneurs Historian Ed Caldwell has documented many of the accomplishments of local Black entrepreneurs, tracing the history of businesses and individuals in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities, going back decades. During this period, African-Americans started thriving businesses and were very successful in their trades.

Ron Andrews, CEO of Black Pages USAThis year five awards were presented to African-American businesses by Broun and Carrboro Economic Development leader James Harris. The awards were based on the longevity of the enterprises. Awards were presented to Tate Construction Company, Dip's Country Kitchen, The Furniture Doctor, and Midway Barber Shop.

Youth Creating Change, a youth group led by Maxeine Mitchell, who started their own clothing business on Graham Street in Chapel Hill, was awarded the youth entrepreneurial award for their ongoing efforts to sustain a successful business.

After the awards were presented, Ron Andrews, CEO of Black Pages USA (a company that offers a Black owned businesses directory) and a nationally renowned motivational speaker, gave a speech encouraging African-Americans of all ages to pursue their dreams and accomplish success.
