12:45 - Village Band
The Village Band was organized in 1974. No auditions were required and everyone with an interest in music was welcome. The experience level of the membership ranged from near professional to people who hadn't played since high school or college but wanted to play once again.

The Band has continued this tradition, welcoming to its rehearsals amateur musicians from Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham, Hillsborough, Raleigh, and Cary. Skill levels are as varied now as they were in 1974. Some members started playing recently after a 20+ year hiatus, while others have long and distinguished careers as amateur performers. Currently under the baton of Jeff Fuchs (Dir. of Sports Bands, Dept. of Music, UNC-CH) the band plays Sousa and concert marches, show tunes, classical transcriptions, traditional band music and contemporary compositions. 2:00 - Emily Waszak with Darrell Desveaux (Alt-country)
Born and raised in Chapel Hill, Emily Waszak, being of Japanese and Appalachian decent, was exposed to a wide range of musical cultures and styles including traditional, folk, bluegrass, blues, country and rock. She was also heavily influenced by Chapel Hill's vibrant live music scene.

At age 14, Emily was given the opportunity to make her own music when she was given her aunt's old Sears and Roebuck guitar. Emily started writing songs immediately, even before she was really able to play the guitar. She played live shows around Chapel Hill and Asheville, NC, where she lived for two years after high school. In September of 2001, Emily packed up her car and headed to Nashville. Having gained the invaluable experience of playing with top Nashville musicians and songwriters, Emily returned home to Chapel Hill in November 2002 where she continues to write and perform her own brand of deeply personal Americana music. 2:20 - The Pink Slips (Rock)
The Pink Slips enamor audiences with their curious charm. There is a rarity of an all female group being able to deliver the vamp and edge of rock without sacrificing all the grace and wiles of being girls has been accomplished by this band. Their debut EP entitled "New Crush" includes seven tracks that were recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ken Mosher (of the Squirrel Nut Zippers) and Robert Sledge (of Ben Folds Five). This will be the first official recorded release by The Pink Slips.

The precocious group is little more than a year old, yet the trio has already toured as far North as New York City and as far East as Austin, Texas. The group formed in November of 2002. The group consists of Leigh Fox (lead vox/bass/guitar), Beth Turner (guitar/vox/bass) and Elizabeth "the Hammer"Hammond (drums/vox).

When performing live, the trio coaxes the crowd with the seductiveness of ingénues- there is fun, innocence and a fetching combination of naiveté and barefaced confidence. And they can bring the rock. The Pink Slips is definitely a band that people will be talking about over the year to come. E-mail: nfo@thepinkslips.com. Website: www.thepinkslips.com.

They play both original music and songs made famous by other acts. Their original compositions have the positive energy of reggae and ska, danceable funky grooves, thoughtful lyrics like those of the more intelligent rock songs and the musical integrity of jazz.

6:00 - Lisa Ray with John Metcalf (Singer/songwriter)
Lisa Ray is a bilingual pianist/singer/songwriter from Durham, NC (originally from Tokyo). Her music may be characterized as adult contemporary pop, with unique Japanese folk influences. She is a classically trained pianist, with an emotional connection to songwriting. Lisa sings in Japanese and in English.

Lisa has performed classical music in various competitions, festivals, and recitals. She performed with the Durham Symphony, after winning the Young Artist Concerto Competition in 1993. Lisa has released her first CD, “This Moment is the Show.” She is currently composing for various instruments, collaborating with other musicians, and working on her next CD “Pearl Diver.” E-mail: Lisabloo@aol.com. Website: http://lisa-ray.net

6:20 - Justin Thompson (Cool jazz vocals, hot swing guitar)
Justin Thompson combines cool jazz vocals with hot swing guitar and timeless song writing. His smoky voice has been compared to Harry Connick Jr. and Sting, while his guitar playing echoes the virtuoso passion of Django Reinhardt and the swinging lyricism of Wes Montgomery. As a songwriter, he crafts beautiful ballads and clever up-tempo swing numbers that sound as if they were written fifty years earlier.

But, Justin is more than just a traditionalist. His latest compositions point to a new direction for jazz in popular music. He also has a sense of humor that is evident by the only cover song on his c.d. -- the Britney Spears mega hit -- “Baby One More Time”. However, because of the strong musicianship, the song actually works as a jazz tune rather than a novelty number. (Justin is quick to add that he is NOT the "Weird Al" of jazz.)

There is no doubt that the critics take Justin seriously. He won Nashville’s “Starving Artist Award” for best male artist of 2002 and 2003. Rage Magazine in Nashville named Tasty Puddin' as one of the top ten c.d.s of 2002. Justin has also been invited to perform at Nashville's prestigious Swan Ball along with Tony Bennett.

Recently, Justin has been touring the southeast appeasing both the college kids and the jazz purists with his dynamic stage presence and a band that swings so hard, they rock. The younger crowd enjoys the high energy level that recaptures the original rebellious spirit of jazz, while the traditionalists appreciate the high level of musicality. Regardless of demographics, all audiences agree, that is some tasty puddin'. Website: http://www.iamjustinthompson.com/
