The Friends of the Century Center are proud to sponsor "The Amazing Violin," featuring Mietek Glinkowski on Monday, April 8 at 8pm in Century Hall. Mietek has 14 years of formal classical music education on violin and viola. His work as a musician is quite impressive and extensive. There were 3 years as a classical orchestra musician in the Great Theater Company, Poznan, Poland, 1979-1982, followed by 4 years as a founder, leader, and jazz violinist of a contemporary jazz quintet "TRAPEZ," 1980-1984, performing over one hundred jazz concerts in several cities in Poland and Germany. Then 2 years as a composer-musician in the contemporary avant-garde theater group "The Eighth Day Theater," based in Poznan, Poland, from 1979-1981, where he composed music to a number of theater productions, toured and performed with the theater company in Austria, Italy, France, England, Germany. He spent 2 years as a member (violin) of classical "Harmony String Quartet," Albany, NY, from 1990-1992, playing at a large number of fund-raising events, including Proctor Theater Teleton, Schenectady, NY (televised by local TV stations), and other social and public events. Mietek then spent 4 years as a member and co-leader of jazz group "Seven Rabbit Stew," from 1991-1995, performing more than one hundred fifty concerts in local, Capital District venues including events such as NY State Hunger Action held in Albany Center Galleries, and the Capital District Jazz/Rock Band Summit. The group was also a featured guest of WRPI jazz radio program. On to 2 years as a member of classical jazz duo "Double G" with Joe Gitto, guitar, from 1995-1997, performing in a number of venues including Saratoga Springs jazz clubs. After arriving to Raleigh, Mietek teamed up with Alex Gorodezky to form a unique duo of violin and guitar that combines the spirit of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhart with the modern compositions of Pat Matheny and Argentinean tangos of Astor Piazzola. Mietek also plays frequently with Tony Galiani (bass), Rick Keena (guitar), Joe Izzo (drums), and Doug Norton (piano) in a duet, trio, quartet, and quintet settings. He has been performing in number of popular local venues. Other performances and artistic projects include a multimedia computer production of advertising for an Engineering Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY using DIRECTOR Multimedia software and his own MIDI compositions, and an artistic happening with Basia Maryanska-Bienkowski in Athens, NY, using his own electronic compositions on electric violin. "In my violin playing I attempt to combine classical/jazz music with electronic art/MIDI compositions as well as computer generated graphical images to produce a more global experience in multi dimensions. I also enjoy the other end of the spectrum, playing plain acoustic-like music with deep roots in main-stream jazz standards and international folklore," says Mietek. This is one you won't want to miss. We can't wait to hear this guy. As always this is a free performance with donations greatfully accepted.
