The Century Center Fountain Dedication

Mayor Mike Nelson presents Kitzmiller and Stemkowski with a certificate as Diana McDuffee looks on.
A tall bronze structure adorned with toga-clad maidens, lion's heads, and fish, mouths gaping for the eventual waterfall, is cause for concern to some in Carrboro. Beautiful or garish? You decide.

The new fountain at the Century Center was dedicated at noon on Tuesday, October 9, 2001. Mayor Mike Nelson gave a short speech declaring today "David Kitzmiller and Carole Stemkowski day," in honor of their generous donation, valued at $18,000, to the Town of Carrboro.

Carrboro Elementary School Chorus led by Carol Cantrell.
Alderman Diana McDuffee read a poem by Carrboro resident poet Ann Humphreys reflecting on how Carrboro drew her back from her travels.

The sweet, soft voices of the Carrboro Elementary School chorus, led by choral director Carol Cantrell, performed a few well-chosen songs. Patriotism and a love of North Carolina floated through the air as a small group of onlookers joined in on the singing of "God Bless America."
