Hidden Teasures of Orange County

A curious kid greets me in rural Orange County

A group of goats in rural Orange County As I was walking out of Talberts at Calvander, I noticed for the first time a small herd of animals gathered in a field beside the convenience store. Munching on green grass, scattered around the field was a group of goats, the kind you would see in a typical petting zoo. As I walked closer to the fence and leaned over the top to take a picture, a beautiful kid curiously approached me. The field was speckled with brown leaves of fall, and reminded me of the simple pleasures of living in Orange County. Leaning too close, the kid stuck his head through the fence, attempting to chew on the purse hanging loosely from my shoulder.

Fall in rural Orange County While the urban areas of Carrboro and Chapel Hill are where most residents live and work, the rural rolling hills and scenic valleys are close enough to cherish for those who take the time to do so. Life's simple pleasures are as close as a trip down the road for most, reminding us of the fields and farms that dot the landscape and make me happy to call Carrboro home.

I can remember more than 20 years ago when I first moved to North Carolina and occupied a dwelling on the cusp of Chapel Hill, but with a Durham phone number, longing for my rural roots of cornfields and vivid fall colors of the home I had left in Indiana. It didn't take long for me to discover similar scenes here in Orange County, amidst the hustle and bustle of the working world, fulfilling my need for a glimpse of the past and making me happy I had chosen this locale to put down roots.

As Orange County's 250th birthday approaches, the place that my children call their hometown has become my sanctuary, my love, my home.

I ride down the back road to Hillsborough on a crisp fall day and am reminded how fortunate I am to have landed in Carrboro.
