Independence didn't ring loud this year, chiming from the clock tower.
It seemed so close, but remained just out of reach.
Held near is the knowldege of repercussions, ignored for a time,
Always looming silently in the back of our minds.
We long to be strong. We shouldn't have to buckle and break.
Was yesterday too soon to say goodbye to pain?

In our small community there is new pain.
The ringing is a funeral dirge that reminds us how quickly our lives can change.
A reminder that the problem is larger than crumbling towers.
All it takes is the blink of an eye, the firing of a gun.
The loss of a life for no good reason. These were unknown heroes in our midst.
No building fell around these children. The wall of misunderstanding still stands.

We waved our flags on Independence Day, in Carrboro and across our great
United States.
United in our pain, so fresh you can smell the fear.
United in our fear, with freedom so close it almost seems attainable.
We await a day when all people may live in peace and truth, undaunted by fear.
Only then will freedom truly ring.
