Carrboro's Community Mural Making

In Support of the Carrboro Mural

Given the Carrboro Board of Aldermen's profuse proclivity to proclaiming proclamations and their stated intention to support local businesses, perhaps the mishap over the Community Mural could be set straight by a proclamation to, "Let It Be." I suggest that given the lack of communicative process over the ordinance in debate (i.e. Kimberli Matin had been given permission for the project), that the town's lawyer could find a way to grant a one-time exclusion for this mural to stay in place while articulating clearly the expectations and application process for future projects.

Mike Nelson is attributed for saying that the request to paint over the business sponsorship names is "a small thing." Given the economic downturn and subsequent strain on independently owned businesses, the good will that this grandfathering-in action would generate in Carrboro's business environment could be significantly huge.

We are appalled at the attitude of our Aldermen toward the Community Mural. Our Mayor Mike Nelson says “We don’t want to see anything obliterated.” But that is exactly what they are demanding. By refusing to allow the businesses and artists of Carrboro to say thank you and share space together to show exactly what our community means to us – you are obliterating something meaningful and beautiful! Our Mayor also said, “It’s not a big deal.” But it certainly is a BIG DEAL for two important reasons. First, it will literally be impossible to duplicate the colors and cover the business names and make the mural still look artistic. Second, many of the businesses will want their money back if this demand is met. They contributed to the community by also supporting Club Nova. So who from the Town Council or Appearance Committee is going to go to Club Nova and request the charitable contributions back?

It makes little sense that the Town of Carrboro has a resolution to support French businesses when they don’t support their own businesses on a simple matter like this. This is demoralizing and certainly doesn’t build community spirit!

We are very proud of Kimberli Matin for her efforts to support local business and Club Nova. This act of the Aldermen is clearly a disincentive for others to work for the community or similar charitable causes. She is a hero in our eyes!

As two of the artists that worked on the mural, we have no intention of helping the town censor a great aesthetic contribution to the community! Let the Alderman or the naysayers on the Appearance Committee be the ones to paint it all over. We have never been so disappointed in our community leadership!! We hope everyone who thinks that the mural is a beautiful addition to our community and should be left intact will contact our Aldermen and let them know ASAP. Let’s continue our community spirit by supporting this wonderful project.
