The Triangle Urban League
National Achievers Society Induction

RALEIGH - April 6, 2001
Friday was an important day for lots of high school students at Southeast Raleigh High School, including kids from Chapel Hill High and East Chapel Hill High Schools, as the Triangle Urban League held its Spring 2001 National Achievers Society induction.

Andrea Bazan-Manson - Executive Director of El Pueblo, Keith Sutton - Triangle Urban League, Rev. Jamal-Harrison Bryant - Empowerment Temple in Baltimore. Md., and Southeast Raleigh High Principal John Modest were among the speakers and presenters at the induction ceremony.

The ceremony included an inspirational speech by Rev. Jamal-Harrison Bryant, who started out as a high school drop out, and ended up as graduate of Morehouse College with a Masters of Divinity Degree from Duke University.

Reverend Bryant spoke about the choices young people find before them, and the difficulties choosing between being popular or being smart. He stressed how too many of our youth choose to be popular and end up with nothing in their lives.

Reciting the litany and calling out the names of the recipients was El Pueblo Executive Director Andrea Bazan-Manson. "I thought the entire morning was very inspirational and uplifiting-- and I'm hoping we can get more and more Latino students to qualify for recognition like this," said Bazan-Manson.

Since 1998 the National Achievers Society, originally known as the Thurgood Marshall Achievers Society, has awarded students who have achieved academic excellence by inviting them to join the society. The ceremony on Friday also included students from Orange High and Southeast Raleigh High Schools.
