When you drive down Merritt Mill Road in the fall, pedestrians can be seen stopping in puzzlement to look at the trees behind these signs, before the junction at Greensboro St/Smith Level Road.
What is this tiny, squashed fruit, smashed on the sidewalk
below these trees. What on earth are these little things littering the walkway?
The answer is persimmons, and the trees are loaded this year. You may be wondering
why nobody has bothered to gather this fruit and put it to use. The first time you
break one of these little jewels open, you'll understand why. They're loaded with
seeds.
One of the requirements of making persimmon pudding, or any of the other delicacies that involve the harvesting and use of this fruit, is sifting out the seeds. Not a joyful task, to say the least, but anyone who has tasted persimmon pudding realizes it's worth the work. ![]() This pudding, which is somewhere between a pudding and a bread, is unlike anything you'll ever taste. There is actually a webpage devoted to the persimmon and other little known fruit. Click the picture to go there. Bring out a food mill, put on your apron and get busy!
