New playground equipment

Charles Wilson, the namesake of Wilson Park.
The new playground equipment at Wilson Park was dedicated on April 15th, 2003, with two very important people on hand to watch. Charles Wilson, a former Town of Carrboro employee who the park was named after, and John Boone, former Alderman and member of the Recreation and Parks Commission, who the new equipment was dedicated to, were both there to see it. New equipment at Anderson Park was included in the dedication.

Also on hand were current and former Recreation and Parks Directors Anita Jones-McNair and Richard Kinney, Recreation Superintendent Carol Rosemond, as well as several members of the Recreation and Parks Department and Commission, and the Public Works Department, who installed the equipment.

Anita Jones-McNair, Mayor Mike Nelson, and Recreation and Parks Commission Chair Doris Murrell performed the ribbon cutting. Mayor Mike Nelson thanked local residents, the students and teachers from Carrboro Elementary School who were there for the dedication, as well as Carrboro parents who persisted for funding for the new equipment. Recreation and Parks Commission Chair Doris Murrell gave background on Wilson and Boone before she, Jones-McNair, and Mayor Nelson performed the ribbon cutting.

The new playground equipment was several years in the making. In 1999 crumbling equipment was removed for safety reasons. Different designs were considered before this configuration was decided upon. Budget constraints then occurred, putting the plans for the new equipment on hold.

Several months of icy and wet weather delayed the project further, leading to this warm and sunny day for the dedication. The first and second-graders waited patiently as speeches were given, then made a mad dash to it soon after the ribbon was cut. Mayor Nelson even joined in on the fun, sliding down the gleaming green slide with arms outstretched. After the ceremony folks gathered under the park shelter for ice cream and cookies.
