The Occaneechi Saponi Spring Cultural Festival

In Hillsborough, NC, just behind the new courthouse, when we walked down the hill toward the river, something magical was happening. People were gathered together; watching, talking, listening, learning. This was the PowWow, an annual event on the banks of the Eno River.

This year the PowWow will be Friday, June 13 from 5 until 9 pm, and Saturday June 14 from 10 am until they can dance no more. Admission to the event is $5 for adults, and $3 for seniors and kids under 12.

At the 2005 PowWow, traditional Occaneechi Saponi and other tribes' brightly colored, intricately beaded, woven, and feathered costumes took the stage, as the warriors proudly displayed the clothing worn by their ancestors.

Entire families participate in the traditional Indian chanting and revered dancing, regaling in their finery. Native Americans from all over the area come together to celebrate their heritage. The youngest warrior we observed dancing was indeed mighty tiny.

Many artists at this annual event create and sell their pieces crafted in wood and animal hide, silver and gold. There are Indian artifacts on display, showing what the average Native American family probably used in their daily lives.

The following information is from the 1990s

The Village

There is a big tree, with a side cut and smoothed down for walking, that spans a short distance to a place of significant American heritage. Grasping the ropes (at least I was) as we crossed the one-way, single file bridge, we wandered over to a replica of one of our country's Native American home villages.

A stretched animal skin is woven around a wooden frame. Someone has been working on a canoe over closer to the river. This reproduction of the Occaneechi Village is designed to show how Native American familes lived. There are houses, a communal fire area in the middle, 2 arbor type gathering places, and a wooden fence surrounding the entire camp. From here, it's a short walk to the Eno River.
