December 8, 2001
When I moved here more than 22 years ago, part of the reason was to escape from the harsh winters full of snow and slush. With wind that would freeze your ears and nose, it made you wish you had put on an extra pair of socks. Salt eating away at the paint job of my latest vehicle as I plowed my way through the the black piles of dirty snow and ice that had been around for months, is something I've never missed in all my years as a North Carolinian. I have, however, taken a liking to the brisk chill in the air that normally accompanies December in these parts, and have actually learned to look forward to it with anticipation, after several months of ungodly heat. So, where did December go?

I know, the calendar still says December, but step outside and you'll wonder if you've entered some sort of weird time warp. The trees might be barren, but the forsythias are in bloom.

Remember December? Remember when your toes were so cold during the Christmas parade you swore they would freeze and fall off if you didn't get inside someplace warm soon? Not this year!

Frankly, I just can't get into the holiday spirit when the weather is 70 degrees with no end in sight. That's Florida, not North Carolina. I haven't even been able to bring myself to haul out all the Christmas stuff crammed into my closets, much less pick out a tree.

"Christmas is less than 3 weeks away!" a perky voice on the radio reminded me. I groaned, knowing not a single gift had been purchased by yours truly, and not likely to be if this weather continues. My favorite fluffy purple sweater has me breaking into a sweat as I pretend winter is here in Carrboro.

I DO remember December! December was 4 foot snow drifts and tears from the cold running down my face. December was piling into my old VW bug in the middle of a snowstorm to do donuts in a parking lot, or drive the wrong way down Broadway because nobody was crazy enough to be out in this weather except us, not even the local police.

I never thought I would miss the winters in Indiana, but I've got to say that right about now I would love to see a big pile of dirty snow.
