8. Pool, seafoam
Ceramic stoneware
Roberta Woods

“Pool” is a double walled (hollow) construction. Clay would crack if this shape were solid therefore a method of construction using inner and outer walls is needed to create volume. The exterior wall is built first and creates the framework for the piece. The center bowl and shallow interior wall are anchored to the floor and rise up parallel to the exterior wall. The top surface spans the hollow interior and marries the outside and inside walls to complete the form.

Although this work was created for its design alone and wasn’t intended to reflect nature, the soft blue-green coloration around the earth colored bowl is reminiscent of a shaded shallow pool, hence the title.
