![]() The Slave Graveyard in Carrboro ![]() I'm ashamed to say how many years I lived in Carrboro unaware of this piece of history on Main St. One day when my friend Nancy and I were walking her dogs, we passed this place. I had passed this graveyard countless times in my travels around Carrboro. Never paid it any mind, anymore than the other, larger graveyard on Fidelity St. The white folks graveyard I now assume. This one, a small tidy yard, with well kept grounds and flowers gracing gravestones, was just another graveyard to me. I was stunned when I read the marker. Then I was moved that we honor these souls, and recognize them for the part they played in building our community. It is a graveyard of slaves. ![]() Like it or not, there was a time in North Carolina and most of the world when people were held in bondage as slaves. None of us can ever begin to comprehend what kind of life this must have been for these individuals. These are names well recognized in these parts; Sparrow, Weaver. Names of our neighbors, aquaintances, and friends are written on the markers, some so small they are difficult to read, with dates going back centuries. I returned to this place later, with my children. Together we walked between the gravestones, noting how young some of the markers told us the remains buried there were. Gone to a better place we always say. Gone to a better place. ![]()
