Just one day after Mike Roig's new sculpture was removed from its perch in front of the Spotted Dog for being perceived as too, shall we say, sexually suggestive, the Chapel Hill/Carrboro School Board met to discuss the implications of going up against the discriminatory practices of a supposed American example of all things good, the Boy Scouts of America.
At issue is the new rule that professed homosexuals will no longer be allowed to participate
in the Boy Scouts of America. The School Board seemed a bit fuzzy about whether this overrides their "no
discrimination due to sexual orientation" policy. Allow me to clear this up for you, if I may.The Boy Scouts of America corporate idiots seem to have decided that they want to know who all of their members, leaders and scouts alike, are sleeping or having a relationship with. Why this is any of their business is beyond me. What about if they're sleeping with a really skanky woman? Does that at least earn them a couple of demerits? While one local Boy Scout leader informed us that his troop had not received any official correspondence handing down this edict from the national offices, as we all know, ignorance of the law is no excuse. By now I guess we've all heard about the Supreme Court ruling that upheld the the Boy Scouts of America's right to eject any members who were found to be homosexuals. There are other groups that abide by this same type of discrimination. One in particular used to call themselves the KKK, but I couldn't tell you what name they are hiding behind these days. They too have the right to practice their beliefs, this is America after all, but that doesn't make it right. I can remember in 1987 when I had to drive up to Statesville to deliver some resin roly-poly Santas for my sister. As I came closer to town on a secondary highway, a huge billboard announced "You are now entering KKK country." A chill literally went down my spine as I glanced over at my beautiful brown baby, cooing contentedly in her carseat. I delivered the Santas and hit the highway back to Carrboro as fast my Reliant-K stationwagon would carry me. On the way out of town I could smell that my daughter's diaper needed attention, but I was too terrified to stop. In my more than 20 years living in North Carolina, I have never experienced such fear as I felt that day. I wonder how many Boy Scouts and Boy Scout leaders got that same chill when this Supreme Court ruling was handed down. I honestly don't know how any Boy Scout Troop with any kind of respect for the human rights of others can, in good conscience, stand behind this national decision. Don't the individual troops have a right to chose for themselves? And if not, why? The Chapel Hill/Carrboro School Board has no choice but to stand firm on their anti-discrimination policy and send a message at the national level that this kind of discrimination only breeds misconceptions and hate, and will not be tolerated in our community. If we don't do it, who will? Is this type of behavior really what we should be teaching our children? Downtown Carrboro Map | Events | Prices | Restaurants | UniqueOrn Enterprises
