![]() The sun had not yet risen into the sky on Thursday morning when the members of the East Chapel Hill High Culinary Arts Club began arriving to load a Thanksgiving feast into the two vans parked at the kitchen doors. It was 5:30 am, but the bleary-eyed kids were ready to work, preparing for the trip to Jones Senior High School in Trenton, NC, a school they adopted 4 years ago in the wake hurricane Floyd. Soon the buses arrived, ready to carry the more than 50 students, parents, & faculty to Jones County, near the Carolina Coast.
While lots of schools and organizations adopted schools and towns after this devastating occurrence, East is one of the few who has continued the good will many years beyond the origination, carrying enough food to feed the nearly 500 students and faculty at the rural North Carolina school.Students and faculty at Jones Senior High School welcomed East with signs and banners expressing their thanks for the ongoing generosity. Some of these same students have been here since the first year East adopted them, and have developed ongoing friendships with the kids from East. ![]() ![]() ![]() Jones Senior High School is part of the Coastal Plains school district, with many cotton fields dotting the landscape along the 3 hour drive from Chapel Hill. Jones is within driving distance of the Atlantic Ocean, making surfing, skiing, and deep sea fishing popular extracurricular activities. The school is in an area of farmland and agriculture, with hunting, baseball, basketball, soccer, and football popular outdoor sports. ![]() ![]()
Under the supervision of Ann Hicks, leader of East Chapel Hill High's Culinary Arts Club, the kids had spent the previous day preparing a feast of turkey, ham, roast beef, and all of the holiday fixings, as well as desserts galore, in preparation for the trip to Trenton.The Culinary Arts Club has become very popular this year, with the number of members on the rise.
