2015 Sculpture

32. Sentinal #3
Cement, paint, and resin
Joseph Gargasz

I am very interested in negative spaces, in particular the negative spaces found in refuse materials. With this series I salvage foam, plastics, and cardboard materials from discarded packing boxes. I then orchestrate these materials into casting forms into which I pour concrete. Once hardened and removed, a new positive form emerges. The final sculptures are powerful reminders of our consumer driven economy, and these newly-created permanent “cast offs” serve to ward off evil and offer protection to those that posses them.
